A Little About Me...
I've always enjoyed the company of animals, and have worked with them in the past. My experiences have been both professional and voluntary. I enjoy the company of people, too, and relish the opportunity to share the knowledge I've gained in these endeavors through education and advocacy.
I continued to volunteer whatever time I could helping animals. But, eventually, I found myself headed down a career path that was, to be honest, not the one I'd hoped for. While I did gain valuable experience and useful skills in the various service positions I held, I soon reached a bit of a crossroads; it was at that time that I decided to return to school, and subsequently earned a B.A. in General Studies, and a B.S. in Geography (concentrating in Environmental Studies) from Eastern Illinois University.
However, in my desire to obtain applicable, "hands-on" skills to complement my university studies, I decided to enroll in the NAVTA-approved Veterinary Assistant CE (continuing education) Certificate program at Harper College. Through this program, I've come to realize how much I missed working with animals. And, now I have the formal training and updated skills with which to do so in a way that aptly meets the standards expected of those now working in the field of animal care.
While in school, I was sitting the pets of my friends. As I grew to enjoy it as much as I did, and--more importantly, became better and better at it--I decided to offer such services on a professional basis. As I helped care for an elderly cat with diabetes up to and through hospice after it was found he had cancer, and--a younger cat who was FIV-positive and treated with radiation and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer (also up to and through hospice)--I knew I'd made the right decision.
